Passwords and account safety · Lesson 1 of 4

Why reused passwords create risk

When one service exposes a reused password, an attacker can try the same sign-in details on your email, social media, shopping, or financial accounts. A password can be long and still create this chain reaction when it is reused.

A practical example

Imagine a small online shop suffers a breach. If its password matches your email password, the shop account can become a route into the email account that resets everything else.

Do this now

Three useful actions

  1. 01

List your most important accounts: email, banking, social media, cloud storage, and work.

  2. 02

Change any password reused across those accounts, starting with email.

  3. 03

Do not make small predictable variations such as adding the service name or current year.
